Chapter 18

For the first time in her life, Ella woke up to the air filled with lots of giggles and chattering. It was Thanksgiving morning, and the bed she had slept on in Lara’s room was so soft and comfortable that she didn’t want to get up. Oh, how she wished she had grown up in a home with several of sisters. She had laughed and talked with Lara and her cousins late into the night.

The mattress tilted a bit as giggles surrounded her. Glory wiggled her way to where Ella lay and grabbed the sleeve of her sister’s nightgown. “Gotta get up, Ella. Gotta get up.” She crawled a little closer and hung her head over Ella’s. “Gonna have cin’mon rolls and sausages and apple sauce and hot chocolate.”

Ella lifted her head and kissed Glory’s cheek. “But you’re just a little girl. Can you eat all that?”

Glory nodded her head so hard her curls bounced around her face. “Hurry. It’s almost ready.” She tumbled off the bed and rushed out of the room.

Silence filled the upstairs. Ella realized she must have overslept. She jumped out of bed and grabbed her dress from one of the pegs on the wall. What would Art’s family think of her—lazing in bed while others fixed breakfast? She dressed as quickly as she could, then decided she didn’t have time to put her hair up. She ran her brush through it a couple of times and tied it back with a ribbon. At least she was presentable.

Puffing as she raced down the stair, she almost ran into Lara who was starting up the stairs.

“Slow down. I’m guessing that nobody told you that we don’t rush around on Thanksgiving morning. Everything’s fixed the night before, warmed a bit and set out on the dining table. People eat when they’re hungry.” Lara grinned. “Except the little ones. They’re always hungry, so we set up a special place for them. Glory’s there now with a couple of Aunt Fiona’s girls helping them with their breakfast.”

Ella placed her hand on her chest as she continued puffing. “Oh goodness. I was so worried I was late.”

Lara shook her head. “Everything’s under control, but someone is waiting to take you out to the orchard for breakfast. If you want to go, that is. And don’t worry about Glory. There’s plenty of older girls watching the little ones.”

Ella was pulled in two directions—she wanted to go to the orchard with Art, for she was sure he was the one waiting for her, but she felt she needed to help out in the kitchen.

Lara must have sensed her indecision because she pointed toward the front of the house. “Don’t worry. There’ll be plenty to do later if you want to help. Art’s waiting on the front porch for you.”

“Thank you,” Ellen called out over her shoulder as she hurried across the parlor. When she slipped outside, she spied Art with a basket in his hand.

He waved to her. “God has blessed us with sunshine and a warming breeze.
